A Little Something - Waste to Wealth Project

Updated: Jun 21, 2022

With population growth and urbanisation, the environment is subject to greater environmental pressure a fair proportion of waste being dumped into landfill such as fabric, plastics and cans - causing great harm to our environment. ALS will act as a waste-recovery facility by re-purposing recyclable material to derive and produce saleable materials. This will help reduce landfill waste, increase environmental sustainability and create employment opportunities simultaneously.

Our waste to wealth project aims to help reduce the amount of waste entering landfill by

reclaiming household items for reuse, re-purpose and resale at affordable prices and by encouraging communities to engage in repurposing of preloved goods.

Raising awareness of the value of waste avoidance and reduction through resource recovery, reuse, repair and recycling is significantly important to ALS. We aim to generate employment opportunities and encouraging community awareness of environmentally responsible design and manufacture. We hope to achieve this by advocating for long-life design, repairable products and the use of sustainable, recyclable materials for making bags, jewellery and aprons.

What and How?

First step collect waste material from community by giving a call out through social media and our networks. Contact us if you have any material you can spare! We will use items donated by the community such as fabric scraps, wool, T-shirts, plastic cups and spoons, and cartons from Foodbanks and workplaces.

Four refugee artisans with expertise from the ALS will re-purpose these donated re-cyclable items.

We will then organise 'Design Labs' where our refugee and migrant artisans will use their creativity, and create new designs and repurpose waste material into new re-useable products.

This will operate through a number of workshops teaching the community how to re-purpose items into new products and will be run for the community to experience.

Four refugee and migrant artisans will also have the opportunity to make items for sale on our online shop or for our pop-up stalls and earn an income.
